- In the studio, disco music musicians mostly used real strings and full orchestra but in live concerts, sometimes the strings section was replaced by this keyboard to cut spending. Check out Walter Murphy and Santa Esmeralda live performances and you'll know what I mean, but anyway,the difference between this keyboard and real strings can be easily distinguished.

- Exactly ! That's why they sound so great compared to modern strings emulations who are more realistic but also less beautiful. They don't have the magic :) That is the difference between "be inspired of" and "try to sound like". So, like you said, a wonderful failure !

- String machines are funny machines. Viola doesn't sound like a viola at all. The same can be said for violin, trumpet, and horn. So in a way, they are a faillure, because they cannot emulate those instruments. But.... the sound of string machines is something divine. Doesn't sound like anything else, and it's a lovely sound
- The chorus effect on the Solina is really more like a fast flanger than anything else.

- Definitely from the dated sounds of the 70s...but definitely not the primary string sound of the period. That would go to the Mellotron.
- Haha, I got a kinda similar funny tale: Two years ago I brought an old tube amp to an amp tech, and while he was working on the thing I discovered a dusty Hohner String Melody II in the corner. I asked him what he's doing with that little keyboard in the corner, and he said: I got it from a customer who cleared his attic. He has no use for it, and so do I. I asked if I can buy it and he replied: Yeah, gimme 50 bucks and it is yours. Fucking greatest deal ever! 100% working and so damn sweet!
